The History of the Chocolate Chip Cookie

The first chocolate chip cookie ever made was in 1930 by a lady named Ruth Wakefield. Mrs. Wakefield was baking her favorite Butter Drop Do cookies and realized that she was out of bakers chocolate and as a replacement decided it would be a good idea to chop up a Nestle's Semisweet Yellow Label Chocolate bar into small pieces and add the pieces into her cookie dough. She had hoped that the chocolate would of melted in with the dough, but instead the chocolate slices only softened. As a result the first chocolate cookie was made as a mistake.

Mrs. Wakefield, at the time, owned an Inn in Massachusetts named the Toll House Inn. Here she distributed her new "invention" to her customers who greatly enjoyed the cookies. Nine years later, the Nestle Company got word of Ruth Wakefield's "big hit" and began marketing their chocolate in morsels under the name Nestle Toll House Chocolate Chips. Nestle bought the rights to the Toll House name as well as Ruth Wakefield's recipe, calling it "The Famous Toll House Cookie." The recipe was even printed on the back of the bag.
